Schaepmanstraat — De Kempenaerstraat

Lucas Lenglet — Schaepmanstraat — De Kempenaerstraat

Schaepmanstraat — De Kempenaerstraat is the title of the temporary artistic intervention that artist Lucas Lenglet did to the facade of his flat in Amsterdam. For five months he screened off the windows of his flat with a steel mesh construction. Reflecting on this artwork, Lenglet describes and unfolds in an essay the historical, socio-political and artistic layers associated with the local circumstances and personal motivations that led to the intervention. It connects the artwork among others to the housing crisis, the rent strike of 1932 and the violent squatters’ resistance of 1985. Another layer in the publication is formed by the interior photographs Lenglet took during his Covid-19 quarantine in his homemade domestic cage. The publication provides insight into the past, the present and the future of Schaepmanstraat — De Kempenaerstraat.
